🎥 FILM REVIEW - The Substance
YOU ARE ONE
It's campy. It's in-your-face, and it's horrific. And that's exactly what makes it so beautiful. Don't let Film Twitter convince you otherwise.
I'll be adding onto this sometime when I'm not swamped with work.
I had watched this movie some time ago with my mother (Which was an experience in of itself - watching this film with prudish parents and somehow coming out of it alive, even your own parent saying that "This film was really well-done." and recognizing it as artistic nudity.)
God I love it when the author clearly hates Hollywood.
On paper, this movie sounds like it shouldn't work. It somehow does.
I can't express it nearly enough how impressive Colie Fargeat is for somehow weaving all of this together.
Body horror, injecting some random freaky unknown drug and suffering the consequences... Gee, did Herbert West create this drug?
These are all tried and true science fiction tropes we've all seen before, but never once did I think to myself during this movie: "I've seen that before, roll the credits already."
Instead, I found myself captivated by the suspense. The pacing at the start is slow, but I never found myself bored.
DURING THE FILM
I'm young, dumb and stupid so I don't know many Hollywood actors. But I was surprised when my mother recognized the actor for Elisabeth Sparkle.

I asked my mom, "Who is she?"
"You don't know Demi Moore? She's a famous actor back then, she starred as the main character in Ghost. She was so gorgeous."
OH MY GOD (SHE WAS RIGHT)
Putting Ghost on my to-watch list sometime solely just to see Demi Moore.
Enough gushing over a pretty lady, I can't help but find it sad and ironic in a way that my mother uses the word was. She was so gorgeous? She's still gorgeous.
But this ties into the message of the movie, how people view women in the entertainment industry: Society deems older women unmarketable.
God forbid you age. Aging is disgusting. None will want you if you have even the slightest line on your face, they will replace you with somebody prettier, fresher and younger.
